Mosquito advice: buy some Sawyer Permethrin and spray your clothes a couple of days before you leave. Buy 3M Ultrathon insect repellent lotion, it is the best. We finally broke down a few years ago and bought a $100 screen house from Walmart and it made all the difference. You have base for getting out of the sun during the day, and a great place to sit around at night and play cards, etc. No mosquito worries. We also bring some YardGuard with us and spray all around the site before we set up our tents. That helps a lot. I called the Park Service a week ago and spoke to a Ranger. The boardwalk to the beach at Watch Hill was destroyed in the hurricane, but will be rebuilt and camping at WH will resume Memorial Day this year.

Hey Jeremiah! This is an awesome blog! I'm all about preparing in advance and having a checklist. Because you provided some very helpful tips, I have now added some things that I didn't think about. I am terrified of mosquitoes! I welt up pretty bad, so hopefully we're well prepared for this coming weekend. And I know horseflies hurt like a @#?%!. Thanks again!

Jeremiah, yes I was over the phone with the visitor's center again and was told that bonfires are NOT allowed. I hear you on hauling every single piece of equipment about a mile to your site, that must be brutal.

However, I don't like the whole "First come, First serve" aspect. Basically, she told me to call the center the morning I plan to head over to the site being that there is limited space.

Also, the bathroom/shower situation would be a pain to get to as well...

Anyways, thanks for such a great post.

Hey Vincent, Thanks for checking out the blog! Wilderness camping looks pretty cool and I did see a small handful of people on their way to a barebones wilderness adventure when I was there. To me the most intimidating aspect of the wilderness camping seemed to be that you had to haul your own water (as well as everything else) a mile or more to your site. I'm not sure what the policy of bonfires is. I have a vague memory that they're not allowed. But my memories are a couple years old, if anyone else wants to chime in...

Thanks for your information on Watch Hill! Very informative!

I do plan on visiting sometime soon but I just have a few questions and was wondering if you, or anyone else that has visited, could shed some light.

1) I'm more inclined to choose Wilderness Camping over the actual campsite. I called their the visitor's centers office and they informed me that the permit is FREE. Just wondering would you prefer Wilderness over the actual campsite, or the other way around?

2)Are we able to set up bonfires on the beach or at the actual campsite?

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments! I hope you have a great time.

Well if anything Grumps taught me a new word, "city-iot." But I have yet to meet him on the beach and enjoy his seminar, "Grumps 101: You're Wrong on Each and Every Level."
